What is human-in-the-loop AI?

Human-in-the-loop AI means a person stays in the decision path: the AI produces work, a human reviews and corrects it, and nothing counts as final until that human approves. It exists because AI systems cannot reliably judge their own accuracy, so the review step is what converts plausible output into dependable output.

Three places the human sits

  • Before execution — approving the plan the AI proposes, so a flawed approach is caught early.
  • During execution — spot-checking intermediate steps rather than only the final artifact.
  • At delivery — reviewing the assembled output and sending specific steps back for rework.

Why it is not just quality control

Review that only catches errors is expensive overhead. Review becomes an asset when corrections are captured and fed back, so the same mistake does not recur on the next job.

On Ordinal, approving a draft triggers memory extraction for the specific worker that produced it. The correction becomes part of that worker's context on future jobs, so a department measurably improves as it delivers.

The accountability argument

Fully autonomous delivery has no one to hold responsible when output is wrong. A named human reviewer gives a buyer a counterparty — someone whose reputation and payout depend on the work being right. Escrowed payment makes that concrete: the money moves only after the buyer accepts.

Frequently asked

Does human-in-the-loop make AI slower?
It adds a review step, but it removes the far more expensive cycle of discovering errors after delivery. In practice the throughput cost is small relative to the rework it prevents.
Is human-in-the-loop the same as human-on-the-loop?
No. In-the-loop means a human must approve before output is final. On-the-loop means the system acts autonomously and a human monitors, intervening only when something looks wrong.
