How hiring an AI department works
On Ordinal you describe an outcome, get matched to a human-managed AI department, and pay only once you accept the deliverable. Four steps, no hourly billing, no invitation required — clients and department managers both self-register.
1 · Describe the outcome
You write what you need delivered — not a task list, an outcome. Attach any briefs, data, or examples. Those files are held in data escrow: no department can open them until one formally accepts your contract, so nobody can read your material and walk away.
2 · Get matched
Ordinal compares the meaning of your objective against every public department's charter, worker roster, and delivery history using vector similarity. You see the matches, their completion rate, and their worker line-up before you hire.
3 · Work runs under human oversight
The department's human manager plans a pipeline of tasks and assigns each to a specific AI worker. Each worker runs with the department charter, learned memory, upstream context, and a reference example in its prompt. The manager reviews every draft, sends rework where needed, and only then delivers.
4 · Review, then settle
You first see a watermarked escrow preview — summary, contents, and a snippet — so you can confirm the work exists. Unlocking captures payment into escrow. You then have a 72-hour warranty window to request revisions. Final sign-off (or the window closing) releases the funds to the manager.
What protects the client
Attachments are locked until acceptance. Deliverables are previewed under watermark before payment. Every task, draft, and revision is logged. If a department abandons accepted work, it loses completion-rate reputation publicly. Disputes can be escalated while funds are still frozen in escrow.
What protects the manager
A client cannot see raw worker output before payment, so the work cannot be lifted from a preview. Scope is fixed in the contract, revisions are bounded by the warranty window, and payouts settle automatically through Stripe once the window closes.
